conference in Sturbridge, MA:
Urban Counselors Sharing Session from 2:00-3:15pm
in the DANFORTH room - Come join urban and ELL counselors
for sharing of best practices in working with urban and ELL students,
along with a brief update on Education Equity for undocumented
students. Please bring 50 copies (or electronic copy to post to MASCA
website) of a summary of your best practices. Suggested issues
include: achievement gap, mandated testing, TOEFL, advocacy, urban
males.
Thursday's sessions also include an additional session on urban youth
by the morning keynote speaker.

us for a discussion with Karen Lott, Chief Educational Manager (K-12)
of NE Regional College Board discussing how College Board can
assist us to best help our urban students.
Also,
an update from the MIRA Coalition and Student Immigrant Movement (SIM)
regarding Education Parity (in-state tuition for immigrant
students) will be provided.
Please
plan to arrive at 4:15pm in the lobby of 73 Tremont St., Boston, where
a student will direct us to the room. The session will begin at
4:30pm.

The Urban Counselors Association of Massachusetts (UCAM)is proud to
announce it's first training for counselors. The training will be led
by Patricia de Oliveira, one of the youth organizers and co-coordinator
of the Student Immigrant Movement (SIM), which is part of the Massachusetts
Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy (MIRA) Coalition. It will focus
on issues impacting immigrant students and how we as counselors can
advocate
for them:
- information about college access
- who is eligible for what regarding financial aid and job training
- bills currently pending at the state and federal level which may
affect college access for immigrant students
- resources and referral agencies for immigrant and undocumented
students
- how students and counselors can get more information or join
in advocacy efforts regarding these issues
The
training will run from 4:00pm to 6:00pm at 73 Tremont Street
(Suffolk
University) in Boston. Directions are available
for download. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided,
and attendance is absolutely free!

21, 2007 MASCA Governing Board Meeting (Date Passed)
UCAM
received affiliate status from the Massachusetts School Counselor
Association (MASCA) at their Governing Board meeting on this date.
Brad Toney, UCAM President, Don Coverdale, UCAM Trustee to MASCA,
and Tim Poynton, Treasurer/Membership Coordinator were in attendance.
